To be honest, there were good things about coming to age in the 00s, and the 90s have been more than a little romanticized.

But I remember articles in TIME and Newsweek from 1998 talking about the new prosperity and amazing future that we had to look forward to. Ten years later, we’re talking about the possibility of a second Great Depression.

Then again, the 1930s were a pretty good period for art and writing. At least that might be something to look forward to.
